PC in Puerto Rico: Health Care, Language, and Cultural Practices

This program consists of an immersion experience in Puerto Rico intended to expand the students' understanding of its history, culture, health determinants and health care delivery system. The program will examine the impact of culture, history, politics, and disasters on health from multiple perspectives using a wide variety of learning experiences (For example: visits to museums of arts and history, Museum of Pharmacy, health clinics, and hospitals located in rural areas as well as in the city of Ponce). This program also provides students the opportunity to increase their Spanish language ability in conversation as well as medical language. Students will have observational learning experiences in health settings that provide opportunity to practice their Spanish skills with persons seeking health services as well as with medical personal. Students will compare different health services in the region and reflection the health determinants. Intermediate knowledge of Spanish required.

SPN 370 Special Topics in Hispanic Studies (Narrating Catastrophe: Health, History, and Culture in Puerto Rico) 3credits
HPM 395 Research 1 credit
NURS 457 Health Promotion 2 credits

Program Fee: $5,289 (approx.)
Please note that the program cost is subject to change. Some financial aid will be available.

Program Fee Includes: Tuition, roundtrip airfare, hotel/accommodations at PUCPR as well as in San Juan, site visits, transportation to and from the airport and for all group activities, breakfast and lunch Monday through Friday, and three group meals are included for all students.

Additional Costs: Independent meals ($585 approx.) are not included.

Application Deadline: November 15, 2023
Once the 10 available spots are full, no additional students will be accepted for 2024.

 

Applications will be reviewed and students are accepted on a rolling basis. Students are expected to pay a $500deposit within two weeks of acceptance. $500 deposit and program payment deadlines TBD.
